23. It’s goodbye and goodnight! November 27, 2008

The end is nigh; what a long trip!

The learning experience was rewarding as I got to explore things I would never have the time or interest in doing. The best thing about this program was the exposure to tools that are actually useful when they pertain to the work that we do. Highlights for me include; all aspects of Google – great tools that are useful and can make life easier, Delicious; the Ebscohost 2.0; all these tools opened up a new horizon to me.

I found some of the aspects of 2.0 facile such as blogging, Facebook, MySpace, Digg, Flickr - these are indicative of the current ‘me me me’ climate where popularity dictates content. Getting to know how they work was useful in the means to this end – but I’ll leave it to the kids.

It was difficult to get through the 23 things in context to the time that I could find to do it. Around work it was hard at first to allocate time to go through the tasks.

In summation; the program was not hard in itself; it was set out well and the instructions were clear; the only inhibiting factor was time alocation.

Over and out!

When I first started this task, bells started ringing! I have had a brush with library 2.0 just before I started 23 Things!

Soon as I saw Ebscohost 2.0, I remembered a training session on Mosby’s Nursing Consult database. I found the training interesting because we saw how this database acted on many levels; many functionalities were obtainable from the one place. Likewise with Ebscohost2.0.

This is certainly a good way of doing things as  2.0 can merge many elements into one! This is one common trait that is endemic to the whole 2.0 movement.

Set up Googletalk and added users for a ‘chat’.

Communication wise, this would be a handy tool because of its ‘real-time’ capability. It could be useful for something like Infoquest or communication between library branches or sections.

Facebook is up and running under my stage name – Johnny Crunch! Have added John Munch as a friend.

Facebook, on the whole is a great communication tool for people to keep in touch or to network. The layout is easy to navigate now that I have acclimitised to 2.0 technology.

Personally, it ain’t my bag, baby. This concept is great for the kiddies – I  like to keep in touch with people through email – more detail and privacy. The correspondence on Facebook and Myspace mainly consists of text not much longer than an SMS message. Its all one and two sentence comments. As a ‘Noticeboard’, yes, it would have some function in terms of disseminating simple information.

I feel I don’t need to advertise my thoughts or interests in a public arena; go looking for people I have not seen since school; or go looking for people that supposedly share my interests/hobbies.

Found a podcast of guitar lessons and theory through PodcastAlley and added it to Googlereader. Very easy. I have now watched a bit and are looking for other types of podcasts on other topics…..

15. Google book search and scholar September 26, 2008

Geetarboy is very familiar with this one.

Use googlescholar on a regular basis for my work. I always search scholar to track the availability of certain articles or to check references.

Booksearch is a nifty little tool I use to peek inside books I am interested in – most only contain a portion that the author has allowed. The complete books here are public domain titles, classics, stuff thats too long to read anyway.

Created a delicious account. Convenient tool – but WordPress just has a plain old link which I have titled Bookmarks.

Great tool this. Just like the other web applications we have looked at like Flickr, this is a place to store documents.

Newmunch and I sent each other some documents as a test. It sends documents to people you select through email with the doc as an attachment.

Handy tool.
